Steve Offutt has twenty years experience with climate change and energy efficiency markets, technologies and marketing programs in the private sector, non-profit sector and at EPA. He has led teams that have created, developed and implemented highly successful marketing and communication efforts, including the ENERGY STAR ^® programs--arguably the most effective government environmental program in the history of the EPA. He represented the ENERGY STAR as its spokesperson at numerous conferences as well as for media coverage in print, on radio and television, even appearing on Bob Vila’s Home Again program. He is a LEED Accredited Professional, a green building certification administered by the US Green Building Council. He was the LEED AP for the Royal Netherlands Embassy's LEED Silver certification, achieved in November 2011, guiding the sustainability team through the LEED process from beginning to culmination.

Steve created, developed, implemented and led the innovative, EPA/business partnership—Best Workplaces for Commuters^SM at EPA, providing significant value to the transportation-demand-management industry across the country. He grew this program faster than any previous EPA voluntary program and engaged more than 20% of the FORTUNE 500 companies to participate in the first two years. Other work he did in the Office of Transportation and Air Quality included strategic planning for EPA’s SmartWay program, helping to guide the Office’s strategy toward voluntary climate programs and bringing the concept of market transformation to the office’s leadership.

He is working with Green Made Simple, a unique, internet-based solution that empowers residents to save energy and money at home. He has consulted with Arlington County, VA on the Arlington Initiative to Reduce Emissions (AIRE), the county’s forward-looking climate change effort, helping devise the business outreach strategy as well as creating marketing programs to engage citizens. He is also currently assisting a European embassy with its LEED certification and helping a K-12 Brooklyn private preparatory school develop an energy plan.

Steve has worked in the carbon markets as COO of Carbonfund.org--a major supplier of retail carbon offsets in the U. S.--and as Director of Business Development for The CarbonNeutral Company/Greenlife, providing significant market insight and strategies for business development prior to their recent merger, in which the CarbonNeutral Company entered the US market.

Steve has significant ongoing experience negotiating, interacting and collaborating with stakeholders in government agencies, NGOs, and private sector companies, including FORTUNE 500 companies, on issues related to: climate change strategy, carbon markets, technology solutions, transportation, energy efficiency, environmental marketing & messaging, public-private partnerships and more. He is the Chair of the Wharton Club of DC’s Green Business Roundtable and the Advisory Committee of the 2009 Green Business Summit II held in the fall of 2009.

Steve earned his MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania focusing on corporate strategy, decisions sciences and the application of business concepts to city and regional planning as well as environmental issues. Prior to that he earned a B.Mus. from the University of Northern Colorado and a M.Mus from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He still occasionally performs both classical and jazz music and resides in Arlington, VA with his wife and two children.
